‘ROOTED IN ROATH’

An exhibition of life in Roath seen through the lives of six generations of one family.

The exhibition is a personal collection of photos, memorabilia, costumes and interesting artefacts spanning over 130 years from Victorian Cardiff to present day.

“ Rooted in Roath” is the story of members of the Green and Jenks family who established the Roath Park Dairy Company, a dairy and grocers, in1888 and traded for 70 years in Albany Road, making them one of Cardiff's oldest family businesses.

The business was relaunched in 2015 by the founders great, great, granddaughter Gilly Jenks who owns Green & Jenks, an artisan deli/grocers and gift shop on Wellfield Road.

The exhibition covers key events in Cardiff, such as WWII, farming, schools and universities, local churches, the houses the family lived in Roath and Penylan, and includes the temperance movement and immigration to China & Canada, all told through various members of the family.

Gilly Jenks is passionate about local history has spent many years researching her fascinating ancestors and is very excited to share their stories with you. The exhibition has been curated over many years.

She says "Discovering her family history has been a real inspiration and I am so proud of my ancestors and what they achieved and how they managed through tough times. They were a family with tenacity and ambition to succeed, a life lesson for all of us and still relevant today."
